Tibetan Medicine, or Sowa Rigpa, is a traditional healing system that has been practised for over 2,500 years. It integrates elements from Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and indigenous Tibetan practices, creating a unique and holistic approach to health. Tibetan Medicine is deeply intertwined with Tibetan Buddhism and emphasizes the balance of the three bodily energies: Lung (wind), Tripa (bile), and Beken (phlegm). These energies correspond to various physical and mental functions, and their balance is essential for health.

The principles of Tibetan Medicine are based on the belief that health is achieved through the harmony of body, mind, and spirit. It focuses on diagnosing and treating the root causes of illness rather than just symptoms. Tibetan Medicine practitioners, known as Amchis, use a variety of diagnostic tools, including pulse analysis, urine examination, and detailed patient histories, to determine the underlying imbalances.

  1. Herbal Medicine: Tibetan Medicine uses a vast array of herbs, minerals, and sometimes animal products to create complex formulas tailored to individual needs. These formulas are designed to restore balance and harmony within the body. Commonly used herbs include myrobalan, rhubarb, and various species of gentian. Each formula is carefully crafted to address specific health conditions and the individual’s unique constitution.

  3. External Therapies: Tibetan Medicine includes various external therapies, such as Ku Nye massage, moxibustion, and hot stone therapy. Ku Nye massage involves the application of herbal oils, acupressure, and gentle manipulation to stimulate energy flow and relieve tension. Moxibustion uses the heat from burning herbs to warm and invigorate specific points on the body. Hot stone therapy involves placing heated stones on the body to promote relaxation and improve circulation.
  4. Spiritual Practices: Tibetan Medicine recognises the importance of mental and spiritual wellbeing in achieving overall health. Spiritual practices, such as meditation, mindfulness, and prayer, are often integrated into treatment plans. These practices help reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and promote emotional stability.
