Go on a rejuvenating journey through Kerala’s Southern Highlands and serene backwaters, where nature, wildlife, and wellness intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. This itinerary takes you from the historic charms of Kochi to the lush, wildlife-rich landscapes of Periyar, where you’ll explore the vibrant spice plantations and enjoy close encounters with elephants and other wildlife from the tranquil waters of Periyar Lake. Stay at the eco-luxurious Spice Village, nestled in the cool highlands, where nature and relaxation is at the heart of your stay. Continue your journey with a serene cruise through Alleppey’s iconic backwaters aboard the luxurious Spice Routes Saffron houseboat, before retreating to the tranquil shores of Kumarakom for further relaxation and daily Ayurvedic massages amidst Kerala’s enchanting landscapes.
Upon your arrival at Kochi International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative. You’ll then be transferred to the Taj Malabar, a luxurious heritage hotel set on Willingdon Island with breathtaking views of Cochin Harbour. The rest of the day is free allowing you to relax and acclimatise. In the evening, you might enjoy a stroll along the waterfront or a delicious meal at one of the hotel’s restaurants, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this historic city.
Enjoy Kochi at your own pace. You may choose to start your day with a yoga session at the Taj Malabar, before enjoying a leisurely breakfast. Later, you may want to explore the city on foot or simply relax by the pool. Whatever you choose, be sure to allow plenty of time to indulge in one of the included signature therapies at the hotel’s spa: either the 120-minute Vishramā Deep Muscular massage for profound relaxation or the Sushupti treatment designed for deep relaxation and glowing skin.
For those seeking a more structured day, an optional guided city tour of Kochi is available. This tour includes visits to the historic Mattancherry Palace, where you can explore a small but exquisite museum of royal artefacts, and the Jewish Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations. You’ll also have the chance to visit the Mattancherry Spice Market and the Kochi International Pepper Exchange, where the air is filled with the rich aroma of spices.
After breakfast and an optional yoga session at the hotel, set out on a scenic drive to Periyar, covering a distance of approximately 160 kilometres (approx 4.5 hours). Periyar is one of India’s most famous wildlife reserves, known for its lush landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and the serene Periyar Lake. Declared a tiger reserve in 1978, this sanctuary is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, offering unique opportunities to view animals like elephants, gaurs, and various bird species in their natural habitat.
Upon arrival, check into Spice Village, a rustic eco-resort inspired by the traditional tribal villages of Kerala. Nestled in the cool highlands of Thekkady, Spice Village is a tribute to the state’s rich cultural and natural heritage. The rest of the day is yours to explore the resort or unwind amidst nature. You might choose to join a guided nature walk, participate in a spice planting session, or simply relax by the pool.
Begin your day with an optional yoga session at Spice Village, surrounded by the sounds of nature. Afterwards, enjoy a hearty breakfast and a leisurely morning at the resort. Perhaps explore the village’s organic farm, learn the art of paper-making, or participate in a guided bird-watching tour.
In the afternoon, visit a nearby spice plantation where you’ll discover the secrets of Kerala’s spice trade. Walk through the lush fields where pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, and other spices grow, and gain insight into how these valuable crops are cultivated and harvested.
Today, enjoy an early morning boat ride on Lake Periyar. As you glide through the tranquil waters, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that comes to the water’s edge, including elephants, wild boar, and a myriad of bird species. This is one of the few places in the world where you can observe wildlife so closely from the safety of a boat.
The remainder of the day is at your leisure. You might explore more of the resort’s unique activities, such as a guided nature walk, a visit to the local tea factory, or simply relax in the serene environment of Spice Village. In the evening, you can enjoy traditional or global cuisine in one of the resort’s restaurants.
After breakfast and a final optional yoga session, drive to Alleppey, where you’ll embark on one of the highlights of your journey—a stay aboard the Spice Routes Saffron houseboat. This luxurious kettuvallom (traditional rice boat) is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, offering an unparalleled backwater experience. As you sail through the tranquil backwaters, enjoy the elegant interiors and modern comforts that make the Saffron houseboat truly special.
Your journey will take you through the labyrinth of waterways, past lush paddy fields and small villages that offer a glimpse into the traditional way of life in Kerala. All meals will be prepared on board, featuring the fresh, local flavours of Kerala cuisine, ensuring a deeply immersive experience.
After breakfast on the houseboat, disembark and continue your journey to Kumarakom, a tranquil village on the shores of Vembanad Lake. Check into the Kumarakom Lake Resort, where your Meandering Pool Villa awaits, offering direct access to the resort’s long winding pool.
In the evening, unwind with a one-hour sunset cruise on Vembanad Lake, allowing the serene waters and picturesque surroundings to soothe your soul.
Over the next three days, immerse yourself in the serene environment of Kumarakom Lake Resort. Start each day with an optional yoga session, followed by included Ayurvedic treatments. Each morning, enjoy a one-hour massage designed to rejuvenate your body, followed by a 30-minute massage in the evening to relax your mind.
Beyond relaxation, the resort offers a wealth of activities. You can participate in a traditional village walk, explore the area by cycling, or try your hand at fishing. The resort’s cultural programs, including pottery and local crafts workshops, provide further opportunities to engage with Kerala’s rich heritage. In the evenings, the resort hosts cultural performances that showcase the region’s vibrant traditions.
After a final yoga session and breakfast, check out of your villa and be transferred back to Kochi for your onward journey. Reflect on the peaceful days spent in Kerala, carrying with you the tranquillity and rejuvenation gained from this extraordinary journey.
